CHAPTER NEWS (by T.K.) !
Steve Bensinger is on a roll! (Congrats Steve !) Steve has been accepted to the US Microlight Team to compete in the mid-August World Microlight Championships. The competition will be held in Long Marston, England, formerly a WWII Army Airforce training facility. Steve will be taking a CGS Hawk in a container being loaned to him and Jon Jacobs (another Hawk competitor), by Fred Anderson (also a Hawk pilot - You probably know Fred Anderson as 'Neil
Anderson', the lead singer in the band
at the Sun n Fun Paradise City Ultralight parties and recording artist of the CD
'Gone Without Saying Goodbye'.)
Chuck Slusarczyk (another member of the band, the designer and owner of Hawk manufacturer
CGS Aviation, Inc., Junkyard Wars television series celebrity expert and inventor of the 'muzzleloader' a/k/a liquid dignity remover) has started a fund to help Steve
and Jon with the expenses of their trip.
They estimate it will cost around 7,000.00
to ship the aircraft in the container
and cover travel and competition expenses. Anyone interested in donating can send it
to Chuck Slusarczyk, CGS Hawk, PO Box 470635, Broadview Heights, OH 44147, phone number
(440) 632-1424.
OTHER CHAPTER NEWS
Steve Bensinger won the 2003 Sun n Fun Ultralight Best Type Construction Kit award
for his recently completed CGS Hawk Arrow II. Steve was notified during Sun n Fun he
should attend the awards ceremony on Sunday evening, at which he received a plaque in recognition of his outstanding achievement. When a member of our Chapter (who has shared the progress of his construction at our meetings) wins recognition for a job well
done, we all share in his pride at his accomplishment. - 'Nice Job' Steve
Craig M. recently purchased a Fisher
Celebrity bi-plane with a Continental 0200 engine, from the Tennessee son of a recently deceased A&P/AI. Craig said he did an excellent job building the plane. The son
flew the plane to Eastman, GA, where Craig
and Terry F. met him. Terry was flying it
back when, on a fuel stop at the Cook
County, GA Airport, the gear collapsed.
It turned out that the builder had used aluminum gearlegs with rivets about every
1/2 inch around the legs. Terry made a
terrific landing when the gear leg collapsed
-- keeping the airplane on one leg until he bled off enough speed to avoid damaging the wing. The result was no structural damage. Craig and Terry fabricated a temporary
gearleg, purchasing appropriate supplies
at the local Home Depot. Now that the plane
is home in Craigs hangar, he will be
replacing the gear legs with chromolly legs. Craig advises we avoid the Cook County, GA Airport. He said that right after the plane settled on the ground, the airport manager drove over in his truck and advised them to move the plane off the runway so other
planes could come in. He then drove off without offering any type of assistance.
Seems Cook County GA Airport is lacking our southern hospitality. Craig said it is a little town of about 3,000 people with an airport manager like Saddam Hussein.
